March 31, 2004 By: Maxwell Stone Spectrum fitness recalls multi-purpose weight benchesSpectrum Fitness is recalling 350 Multi-Purpose Weight Benches because the benches have a metal hinge that can break causing a sudden shift of the bench. The shift can cause the user to lose control of weights being lifted and result in injury. The benches are model number NG-14 N. The model number can be found on a silver label on the bench's slanted support bar. These weight benches have white metal frames, and black seats and cushions. Fitness and sporting goods stores sold the benches nationwide from January 1998 to October 1998 for about $265. Spectrum Fitness has received two reports from consumers who reported the hinge breaking and shift occurring. One of the reports involved a back injury.
Consumers should stop using the bench immediately and call toll free (800) 720-7810 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday to obtain a free repair kit and instructions, or a refund.
