The Tyler-based non-profit will receive support from the LAF for its innovative, comprehensive physical activity programs.A community grant from the LAF will enable the Cancer Foundation to fund part-time patient facilitators to monitor participants’ exercise programs both in their homes and in community centers. The grant will also be used to purchase two treadmills for program participants for use in their homes for the duration of the monitored program. “Many cancer patients don’t have the physical or financial means to implement structured exercise programs in to their life. Through the grant from the LAF, we will provide these survivors with the means needed to stay strong, physically and emotionally, during and after treatment,” said Gary Kimmel, M.D., board chairman for the Cancer Foundation for Life As part of its 2003 Community Program, the LAF partnered with a variety of organizations that provide programs that are positively impacting the quality of life today for those living with, through and beyond cancer. The LAF awarded more than $605,000 in grants to
43 community non-profit organizations across the country, representing 22 states and
Washington, D.C. The LAF seeks to fund innovative projects, such as these, that promote the
optimal physical, psychological, and social recovery and care of cancer survivors and their loved
ones. Through their unique work these organizations address the following survivorship issues:
adolescent/young issues, physical activity and survivorship education.
