August 28, 2005 By: Maxwell Stone Y+ opens first Yoga-centric Fitness Center in ShanghaiY+, the first Shanghai fitness center to focus on yoga, today opened its doors at 299 Fuxing West Road. The two-studio, two-deck multilevel fitness center offers classes of different types of yoga, at a variety of levels to accommodate beginners as well as experienced yogis. Y+ also hosts workshops on healthy living topics.“The peacefulness and simplicity of the Y+ studio allows students to concentrate on their yoga practice, which is not possible in the noisy environments of other Shanghai fitness facilities,” explains Irene Lee, Y+ Program Director, “In addition, the fact that Y+ provides one efficient destination for training and access to a community of healthy individuals is winning many busy urbanites over to the Y+ way of life.” The preliminary class offerings of Y+ include Hot yoga, and beginner and advanced Astanga yoga. Hot yoga classes are taught in a heated studio that averages 37O Celsius and features 26 postures and two breathing exercises; this form of yoga comes from Los Angeles and is also known as Bikram yoga. Astanga yoga classes at Y+ teach students to synchronize their breathing with a progressive series of postures to create high levels of internal heat. This internal heat generates a purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs, and improves circulation and balance as a result. Classes are open to both men and women.
“In more and more international cities, yoga is growing in popularity as the preferred fitness program for busy, urban dwellers,” claims Y+ CEO Harry Yu, “Y+ is Shanghai’s yoga solution for both residents and visitors.”
