East Dunbartonshire Council is tackling the country's health and fitness crisis

The Allander Active Health Week targets the major health issues facing our society including diabetes, heart disease and smoking. In addition to providing specialist advice, blood pressure, lung capacity and weight checks, the week includes a packed programme of sporting activities and taster sessions, many of which are free.

Activities include: adult squash, health walks, indoor bowling, junior judo, mini basketball, mini tennis, scuba diving, swimming, Reiki, roller hockey, spin and swim, Tae Kwon Do, Tei Karate and water polo.

Tuesday 23 March sees one of the highlights of the week with an evening long health and fitness extravaganza. For just £5 visitors can try as many classes as they want. The classes last 25 minutes each and cover activities such as circuit training, spinning, pilates and fighting fit.

Tuesday also sees the launch of Club Max's new Body Balance and Body Pump classes. Also on offer will be therapy taster sessions including Indian head massage and aromatherapy. Healthy eating tasters from ASDA will be available as well.

Throughout the week Allander Leisure is also offering a wide range of special membership packages to encourage people to get more exercise. These include: free passes for swimming, spinning and badminton and 10% off activity prices.

Cllr Vaughan Moody, Convener of the Council's Connect Services Committee, said, Obesity is on the increase and for the first time this century life expectancies are falling on the West of Scotland. Exercise and diet are becoming a matter of life and death.

This event shows people just how enjoyable getting exercise can be. It covers everything from a cardiac class, designed to ease people back into exercise, to the high paced excitement of roller hockey with the local Vipers Team.
